Any organization, whether it is a sports team, school, or a Fortune 500 company, must have effective leadership and management in place in order to be successful.

I hear you saying, “leadership and management are the same”.

Not so fast little grasshopper. I know many people use these words interchangeably, but understanding that leadership and management are completely different is vital to your organization’s success and your success as a leader. Both consists of guiding individuals and motivating them, but the approach and focus is different.

So what is leadership? You ask the best questions.

Leadership is all about leading others through inspiration and influence towards the vision of the department or organization. Leaders have the ability to take the strengths of those they lead, and utilize them to create a successful team. Leaders empower their teams to tap into their creativity and do the work. When you think of leadership, think of empowerment, visionary, inspirational, and influencer.

On the other hand . . . . . .

Management leans more towards making plans, organizing, and obtaining resources and individuals to achieve the goal of the organization. Managers make sure all daily tasks get done and the organization is operating the way it should.

Great leadership and great management makes for a successful organization. If one of the two is lacking, it will show up in all aspects of daily operations, work production, culture and climate, and even employee behavior.
